A follow-up to the Academy Award-winning The Great Beauty, Youth is Paolo Sorrentino’s second foray into English-language film. This UK co-production is led by iconic British actor Michael Caine and was nominated for the prestigious Palme d’Or at this year’s Cannes film festival.
Two old friends vacation at a prestigious hotel in the Swiss Alps. Fred (Caine) is a suave socialite and retired composer who the British royal family is pestering to play again. Mick (Keitel) is a film director rushing to complete a screenplay. Together they muse sympathetically and with curiosity at those that surround them; including their children’s confused love lives, Mick’s enthusiastic young writers, and the hotel guests.
Youth is thought-provoking, stylish and daring. Sorrentino delivers his hallmark stunning cinematography, expert use of music, unpredictable interludes and towering performances in this absorbing festival highlight.
